6 pages in length. Taking example from Michael Ondaatje's "Running in the
Family," the student is able to reflect upon one's own Chinese heritage and
openly relate to the inherent struggles associated with progress and
modernization. That the Chinese legacy is one of hard work and loyal dedication
to one's homeland amidst economic strife, it is not surprising to find that the
student's parents had little time raise their child while they ran the family
business, finding it necessary to send the student to America in search of a
better life through higher education. To the Chinese, a solid education is
tantamount to future economic success. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Chinese Immigration
[ send

5 pages in length. During the period of Chinese immigration to the United

image of California as a free white republic, "coolie" (unfree,
servile labor that threatened the working class) and "deviant"
(Chinese women as prostitute and Chinese men as domestics were sexual threats
undermining the American ideal of the cult of domesticity and the beliefs
against racial mixing). Examining the specific political, economic, social and
legal treatment the Chinese immigrants received, one might readily surmise that
the coolie image contributed most to that treatment and eventual exclusion of

The Idea of Womanhood in Traditional
Chinese Society
[ send
me this paper ]
Since as early as the 7th century B.C., women in China have been permitted to
hold positions of power and even lead in prominent positions as national
figureheads. Unfortunately, no level of leadership, education or social
prominence for women could change the patriarchal nature of traditional Chinese
society. From the early Han Dynasty to the last of the Chinese dynasties, the
Ch'ing Dynasty (17th-early 20th centuries) women have played significant and
defining roles in the political structure of China, though these roles have been
defined by the death of their husbands and their circumstances rather than by
the social acceptability of female leaders in Chinese society. This 5 page paper
reflects the lives of a number of prominent women in Chinese history, including
Ban Zhao of the Han dynasty, Song Ruoxin of the Tang, Empress Wu Zeitan of the
Zhou Dynasty, and Tzu-Hsi, dowager Empress of the Ch'ing Dynasty and defines the
impact of the patriarchal definitions in determining their impact on history.

(1839-1842 and 1856-1858) between China and Britain. In 300 years of trade with
China, Britain had developed a thirst for China's tea as well as appetites for
Chinese silk and porcelain, but pre-industrial China found very little to desire
from Britain's offerings. To ease the resulting tremendous trade deficit,
Britain began growing opium in its colony India and insisted that China allow it
to enter their country for use by their people. China declined the affront to
their national sovereignty, lost Hong Kong to Britain, and later lost all right
to restrict the opium trade within their borders. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Today's China in Light of the Past
[ send
me this paper ]
A 5 page paper discussing modern China with reference to long-standing beliefs
and practices. As a culture both ancient and so new as to be positively modern,
China remains a study in contrasts. Guangdong International Trust &
Investment Corporation (GITIC) was forced by the government to go bankrupt when
it was not destitute, but the government was alarmed over what it perceived to
be the same types of patterns that preceded the currency and banking crisis in
Japan and determined to force the GITIC to cease making what it believed were
loans of questionable value. China remains an official 'big emerging market,'
but it is yet unclear just what form of government and economic structure will
grow from the current chaos. Bibliography lists 23 sources.

Contemporary Issues And Images Of
Asian-Americans
[ send
me this paper ]
8 pages in length. The notion of cultural assimilation carries with it
significant challenges for those who strive to adapt to an entirely new way of
life. The manner by which issues are addressed in Asian-American media provides
one with a significantly better understanding of just how difficult a time
myriad Asians have had while attempting to reconstruct their entire cultural
existence. Various media formats have adopted a perspective on Asian
ethnocentricity in such a way as to clearly illustrate these challenges, with
film, television and print offering much the same viewpoints. The vast issues
that are presented compare to historical depiction by way of carrying forth the
continuing difficulties that exist within Asian-American populations, inasmuch
as historical communities reflected much the same obstacles that exist within
contemporary society. When one examines the importance of such media attention
with regard to the Asian-American society, literary contribution is one area
that cannot be overlooked, and Amy Tan is one writer who is at the forefront of
accurate depiction. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

that of the particular group of Chinese Muslims, a general comparison and

issues which illustrate different aspects, the majority of the issues illustrate
vast similarities in the cultures. While this may be directly related to
religion to some extent, the differences are, more than likely, attributable to
the basic and essential qualities that are inherent in history and culture's
involvement in such. For individual cultures appear to follow a similar path in

China's New Economy for the New
Millennium
[ send
me this paper ]
A 12 page paper discussing China's great economic gains since the end of the
late-1990s Asian currency crisis. China has proven itself to be more than
"just" another developing nation seeking to take advantage of
temporary advantages for short-term gain. Rather, indicators point toward a
nation taking concrete steps to building positive and long-term benefits, taking
into account the needs of both the government and the people. China led the
world in advances for centuries, but its intended isolation and later full
embrace of communism stymied the economic growth it could have enjoyed long ago.
It seems now to be poised to rectify past oversights, creating a hybrid of
economic reality and ideology that can satisfy ingrained and long-standing
philosophy. The paper examines such factors such as GDP, balance of trade,
private ownership, and others. Bibliography lists 20 sources.

[ send

7 pages in length. Henry Serruys' account of the Hung-Wu period (1386-1398) in
"The Mongols and Ming China : Customs and History" draws upon the
author's literary talents, as well as the sordid historical events that revolve
around China's Mongols during this period. This detailed analysis provides the
reader with a scope of knowledge both vast and explicit, with the book's aim
being that of a comprehensive critical overview of how China's Mongols managed
to rule for the better part of a century. Indeed, the sources upon which Serruys
draw are instrumental in his ability to portray this era as one of China's most
powerful. Clearly, the method by which the author assembles the work, as well as
his complementary writing style, brings forth the underlying reasons that such a
forceful period existed in China's past and what its people have learned from
such events, which represent the book's larger issues. No additional sources
cited.

Housing As Social Control

me this paper ]
A 9 page discussion of the different social control theories utilized by the
United States and Tibet / China with respect to housing. The United States and
China have very different forms of social control, especially in regards to the
settlement of land in another country, as China is settling Tibet. While it
would seem that the United States and China/Tibet would have nothing in common
in regards to their settlement policies, the fact remains that both countries
use a similar social theory as the basis of social control in their
neighborhoods. Bibliography lists 11 sources.

Human Rights and Sovereignty
[ send
me this paper ]
A 5 page paper discussing when outside forces should intervene. Nations are
indeed sovereign entities, and they need to be regarded as such. When it becomes
obvious that they are actively abusing the rights of their own citizens,
however, then outside forces need to intervene. The decision may not be
politically popular, but it is morally right. Taking that path benefits all
involved, and the benefits of the action outweigh the negatives associated with
momentarily violating a nation's sovereignty. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Japanese and Chinese Development:
Reflections of World War II and the Cold War
[ send
me this paper ]
A 5 page comparison of the relative development of Japan and China. Links the
apparent differences to circumstance and choice of post World War II allies.
Contends that the U.S. was charged in many ways with restoring the economic
stability of Japan since World War II but only began to emphasize trade
relations with China in the last decade. Contends that Japan is much more
economically stable because Japan concentrated on high-tech production geared
toward export while China’s concentration, as a matter of her Cold War
alliance to the U.S.S.R., was on the manufacture of war goods. Bibliography

Joint Ventures and International
Business in China
[ send
me this paper ]
This 8 page report discusses international joint ventures in China and the
successes of joint business ventures between Chinese business and foreign
businesses. The ability of business investors who reside in one country and
invest in a business in another to influence the firms in which they have an
ownership stake is an issue of long-standing concern. With the growth of large
corporations and the dispersion of their stockholders in the past several
decades, concern about the divorce of ownership from control became important.
The question of establishing wholly-owned business in China has become an issue
of concern, as well as the future of multinational enterprises both in and with
China. Bibliography lists 10 sources.
